Let's talk about the part of a van build that nobody gets excited about but everyone regrets skimping on: insulation. If you're figuring out how to insulate a camper van, you're already ahead of a lot of first-time builders who go straight for the fun stuff (hello, subway tile backsplash) and treat insulation as an afterthought. Don't be that person. Good insulation is the difference between a van that's comfortable at 20°F or 100°F, and one where you're miserable, sweating, or burning through propane just to survive the night.
We've seen a lot of builds come through the shop, and the insulation question comes up in almost every single one. So here's the no-fluff rundown on what actually works, what to skip, and how to think about it like someone who's actually going to live in this thing.
Why Insulation Matters More Than You Think
A van is basically a metal box. Metal conducts heat and cold like crazy, which means without insulation your rig turns into an oven in summer and a fridge in winter — sometimes both in the same 24 hours if you're chasing shoulder-season weather. Insulation slows that heat transfer down, keeps your interior temps stable, cuts down on condensation, and even helps with road noise. It's not glamorous, but it's foundational — like, "your entire build quality depends on getting this right" foundational.
The R-Value Conversation (Without the Boring Physics Lecture)
R-value measures how well a material resists heat flow — higher is better. But here's the thing a lot of guides won't tell you: in a van, you're working with maybe 1-2 inches of cavity space in the walls, so you're never going to hit the R-13 or R-20 you'd see in a house. The real game is picking the highest R-value-per-inch material that fits your space and budget, and being smart about air gaps, thermal bridging, and moisture control.
The Big Three Insulation Materials
Almost every build comes down to a choice between these three options (or some combination):
3M Thinsulate
This is the go-to for a huge chunk of the van build community, and for good reason. It's got a strong R-value per inch (right around R-5.5), it's moisture-resistant, it dampens road noise, and it's genuinely pleasant to install compared to some alternatives — no itching, no respirator required. The downside is cost; Thinsulate isn't cheap, and you'll need van-specific rolls sized for your make and model.
Sheep's Wool (Havelock and similar)
Wool insulation has become a favorite for a reason that surprises people: it actually manages moisture instead of just resisting it. Wool fibers can absorb a good chunk of their weight in moisture vapor and release it later without losing insulating power, which matters a lot in a sealed metal box where condensation is enemy number one. It's also naturally fire-resistant and non-toxic. It costs more than foam board, but a lot of builders consider it worth every penny for the peace of mind.
Closed-Cell Spray Foam or Rigid Foam Board
Spray foam wins on raw R-value per inch (up in the R-6 to R-7 range) and it seals every nook and cranny, which sounds great on paper. The catch: it's permanent, it's messy if you're DIY-ing it yourself, and it can trap moisture against the metal if it's not applied correctly — which has led to some ugly rust surprises down the road. Rigid foam board (XPS or polyiso) is a middle-ground option that's cheap and easy to cut, but it's tough to get a good fit around a van's curves without leaving gaps.
Should You Use a Vapor Barrier?
This one trips up almost every first-time builder, because it seems logical: seal everything up tight so no moisture gets in, right? Actually, most experienced builders now steer away from a true vapor barrier. Vans have too many curves, seams, and penetrations to ever get a perfect, unbroken seal — and a partial vapor barrier is worse than none at all, because it traps whatever moisture does sneak in against the metal, right where it can't evaporate. That's a rust problem waiting to happen.
This is a big reason breathable materials like wool and Thinsulate have gotten so popular — they let trapped moisture work its way back out instead of pooling against the van's skin. If you go with foam board or spray foam, pay extra attention to sealing penetrations (wiring holes, bolts, vents) and make sure your interior wall paneling isn't creating a moisture trap of its own.
A Simple Approach That Works
If you want a system that's forgiving for a first build, here's a solid framework:
Fill the wall cavities and ribs with Thinsulate or wool for flexibility and moisture management. Use rigid foam board in the flat floor and ceiling sections where you can get clean, tight-fitting pieces. Skip the vapor barrier and let your material breathe. Finish with wall paneling that's got a little airflow behind it rather than pressed flush against the insulation everywhere.
It's not the cheapest approach and it's not the single-highest-R-value approach — it's the one that balances performance, moisture safety, and your sanity during install.
A Few Things Nobody Tells You
Thermal bridging is real — every exposed metal rib in your walls is a highway for heat to bypass your insulation entirely. Wrapping ribs in a thin layer of foam or reflective wrap before your main insulation layer helps a ton. Also, don't forget the windows and doors; they're often the weakest link in the whole system, so thermal window covers or coach doors with their own insulation are worth the investment. And insulate your floor — it's easy to skip since it's less visible, but a cold floor makes the whole van feel colder than it is.
Bringing It All Together
There's no single "correct" insulation setup — it depends on your climate, your budget, and how hands-on you want the install process to be. What matters is understanding the tradeoffs so you're making an informed call instead of just copying whatever the last YouTube video told you.
